Create Operational Velocity!
A few years ago, I introduced a concept to my clients to help them understand the reasons behind their underperformance, which I called the capability gap. In essence, the capability gap is a situation where a company’s performance is not living up to its potential. Closing this gap means improving performance in one or more of several areas in a business: organizational design, talent acquisition and employment, workflow processes, technology enhancements, and company culture. These improvements will generate operational velocity, which every high-performing company seeks.
Organizational design structures a company, including its hierarchy, job assignments, and decision-making procedures. An inadequately designed organization may cause inefficiencies, redundancies, and delays. On the other hand, an optimized design can significantly enhance operational velocity by eliminating the obstacles that slow down communication and the workflow.
Talent acquisition and employment refer to finding and retaining employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to help a company achieve its goals. If a company fails to recruit and hire qualified employees, it will widen the capability gap. An ideal talent acquisition and employment system helps find the right individuals for the job and assigns them to roles that best use their knowledge, skills, and abilities. By doing this, the company will create operational velocity and achieve exponential results.
Workflow processes are the steps followed within an organization to complete work tasks. These processes determine the allocation of resources, the use of technology, and the order in which tasks are performed. Well-planned and documented processes that are regularly reviewed and updated can significantly close the capability gap and improve operational efficiency and velocity.
Technology enhancements utilize advanced technology to streamline and optimize various operations within an organization. They aim to boost a business’s productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness by automating processes, reducing errors, and enabling better decision-making. A lack of technology or outdated technology will hamper operational velocity, causing delays, errors, and inefficiencies.
Companies must cultivate a strong, cohesive, purpose-driven culture to boost productivity and reduce employee turnover rates. By fostering collaboration, innovation, and growth, companies can establish a thriving workplace that inspires employees to stay motivated and committed to achieving their goals. A positive work culture benefits the organization and its employees and creates and sustains operational velocity.
When a company improves its performance, it creates a ripple effect that closes the capability gap and creates operational velocity. This enables the company to achieve better outcomes, such as increased revenue and profit, higher customer satisfaction, and improved market share. Ultimately, this sets the stage for a more prosperous future, where the company can continue to grow and thrive in a highly competitive business landscape.
