Ode to a Great One
Born in 1930, first-generation American Marilyn Raggio embodied the spirit of the Greatest Generation. Shaped by the era’s hardships, she developed strong patriotism, remarkable resilience, and a steadfast commitment to her family and community. While her father and brother served in World War II, Marilyn cultivated the quiet strength that defined her life.
Marilyn chose to stand in her husband’s shadow, a space pioneer, but her own light was never dimmed. She was a matriarch who guided her family with a steady hand while making her mark on the community. She was a successful solopreneur providing medical administrative support to a network of physicians. Her leadership shone through her service as president of Soroptimist and her participation on several boards. Her dedication was formally recognized when the Glendale Chamber of Commerce named her Woman of the Year.
A convert to Catholicism, Marilyn’s faith was a cornerstone of her life. She was a beloved figure at her parish, Holy Redeemer, where she fundraised, taught, and served as a lector and Eucharistic minister. Known for her easy ability to make friends, she became a trusted confidante and a mother figure to many clergy. She wasn’t afraid to question the status quo, but her faith remained steadfast.
Perhaps Marilyn’s most remarkable legacy was her ability to bring people together instead of pushing them apart. Her maternal love extended well beyond her own children, welcoming friends of all ages and backgrounds into her circle. She held everyone she loved to high standards, encouraging her children and grandchildren to strive for excellence and to become positive contributors to the world.
Marilyn Raggio’s life offers a strong example of authentic leadership. It wasn’t built on a title or fame, but on a sincere commitment to her values and community. In a time often divided, her example of unity serves as a lasting lesson.
Imagine if our leaders embodied her qualities: a strong belief in their country, the courage to recover after setbacks, and the moral strength to stand for what’s right. Imagine if they focused on uniting people instead of dividing them. Marilyn understood that real impact comes not from power, but from a genuine desire to bring others together and lift them up.
Her influence has affected countless lives, and her memory will be treasured for generations. Her life demonstrates that the most remarkable leaders aren’t always the ones in the spotlight; sometimes, they are the ones working quietly behind the scenes, creating a legacy of grace, strength, and unity that endures.
