Santa Clarita Ballet Presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Twelve Dancing Princesses
Fairies, princesses and enchanted forests will fill the stage this summer as the Santa Clarita Ballet presents a double bill of beloved story ballets: Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Brothers Grimm fairytale The Twelve Dancing Princesses. A delight for the whole family, the program blends whimsical storytelling and the company’s signature mix of professional guest artists alongside Santa Clarita’s own homegrown talent.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream unfolds in an enchanted forest where two pairs of star-crossed lovers and a band of earnest amateur actors become entangled in the mischief of a spirited troupe of fairies. The ballet captures the play’s comic confusion and tender reconciliations through expressive pas de deux and fleet-footed ensemble work. Paired with it is The Twelve Dancing Princesses, a magical Grimm tale in which twelve royal sisters sneak away each night to dance until their shoes are worn to tatters. The story’s mystery—how the princesses’ footwear can be ruined while they are locked away—unfolds through evocative choreography that balances courtly refinement with moonlit revelry.
Audiences will recognize returning guest artists from last June’s Sleeping Beauty: Evan Strand (National Tour of Frozen), Ethan Ahero (State Street Ballet), Simon Costello (formerly Los Angeles Ballet) and James Velasco (formerly South Carolina Ballet).
This June’s performances also mark a heartfelt milestone for the Santa Clarita Ballet as the company bids farewell to five graduating seniors whose commitment in the ballet studio has matched their dedication in the classroom. Cari Mayfield (CHAMPS Charter High School of Performing Arts) aims to pursue a professional dance career after completing a BFA in Dance; Karlah Maejima-Gonzalez (Canyon High School) plans to major in Business and enter film production; Analise Baker (Bishop Alemany High School) will also study Business; Faith Freund (Village Christian School) will attend the University of Michigan to major in Biomedical Engineering while minoring in Dance; and Annie Han (Valencia High School) will study Data Science at UC Berkeley. Their diverse academic ambitions and artistic achievements reflect the Santa Clarita Ballet’s role in nurturing both talented performers and well-rounded young people.
Together, these two ballets promise an evening of enchantment that celebrates story, spectacle and the next generation of dancers.
Two Performances: Saturday, June 13th and Sunday, June 14th at 1pm at the Santa Clarita Performing Arts Center.
