Does Your Spinal Decompression Twist, Flex, or Rotate?
To understand spinal decompression you must first understand the importance of your discs. Located between each vertebra is a cartilage disc. This disc is to act as a spacer to keep the vertebrae apart. It also acts as a rubber bushing, providing a spinal shock absorber. They also provide a specialized surface for each vertebra to mechanically move on. This movement is necessary to nourish the discs.
Sunscreen: Not Just for Summer Anymore
You wouldn’t think of hitting the beach for that volleyball game without applying your sunscreen. But how many people would think that hitting the slopes for a day of snowboarding would require the same amount or more sun protection than at the beach?
Snow reflection increases UV intensity 35 percent more than water reflection. If you’re heading to the mountains for a winter sport activity, don’t forget your sunscreen. And don’t think that cloud cover provides you with any protection from the sun’s UVA (aging rays). UVA penetrates the clouds and continues deep into the skin to cause long-term damage, such as sun-induced aging, and is a major cause of skin cancer.

Is there something about your smile that’s driving you nuts? A darkened tooth or an unsightly gap, or tooth chips and nicks that just ruin the effect? You might be surprised at how comfortably we can correct those minor flaws. But you’ll really be surprised at how quickly it can be done!
Infant and Toddler Vision Checklist
As an eye care practitioner, it is my job to know what to look for in infant and toddler visual development. As a proud new parent, I thought it would be a good editorial to list the expected visual performances of infants and toddlers for parents.
Birth to six weeks:
Choice of Tooth Whitening
Many patients have said, “I would like to have my teeth whitened. However, there are so many products and ads for whiteners that it is hard to decide which is best. What do you recommend?”
The Pursuit of Excellence

Building the Life You Want in 2009
Most of us will be setting goals in this new year. How many of you reached the goals that you set for yourselves last year? Maybe you’re still working on it? Maybe you keep falling back into your old behaviors? Maybe it’s time to entertain the possibility of a different approach? It has been proven that hypnotherapy is a powerful tool for helping people reach their goals.
Botox More than a Wrinkle Cure
Most patients think of Botox as a wrinkle cure, however Botox plays a major role in facial shaping and sculpturing rather than just injecting wrinkles.
Skin Resurfacing
Looking to get your glow back? Skin resurfacing just might be the solution. Time, sun damage, free radicals and all of our skin’s enemies can steal that fresh-faced glow that makes us appear more youthful. There are many different ways to resurface the skin and choosing a method can be overwhelming. Depending on what kind of damage you have or how severe the damage is can help in the decision-making process.
Common Cold
The common cold is a viral infection of the lining of the nose, sinuses, throat and large airways. Many different viruses cause colds. Rhinoviruses cause most spring, summer and fall colds. Influenza (flu) viruses and respiratory syncytial viruses cause colds in the late fall and winter. Flu viruses spread easily from person to person by infected droplets in the air from people coughing and sneezing. Rhinoviruses and respiratory syncytial viruses are also airborne, but most likely by direct contact with infected secretions carried on the fingers.
Gift Idea for Seniors
I’m asked a lot for gift ideas for seniors. My answer is usually the same, but especially now, with our economy, it’s the perfect price — free — Time! Spend an extra hour with that aging loved one, or better yet, set aside an entire day. It’s true for all of our family and loved ones as we rush, rush, rush, but even more so for seniors. Loneliness, abandonment and depression are huge among our seniors during the holidays. I know when talking to my clients, and the seniors in my life, they would gladly exchange most any gift for moments with their loved ones.
Time for Help
You are unhappy and frustrated with your relationship, yet you fear that your partner will resist getting help. How you address it will have a great impact on the results. Picture this: a man wants to borrow his neighbor’s lawnmower. While walking to the neighbor, thoughts flow through his head (He’s probably upset that I didn’t return his chainsaw or I returned his hedge trimmer broken.). By the time he gets to the neighbor’s door, he is worked up and pounds on the door. When the neighbor opens the door, the man yells, “You can keep your darn lawnmower. I didn’t want it anyway!”
Detoxification for Better Health
Detoxification is a treatment made popular because toxins have become a part of our everyday lives. To compound the problem of our toxic environment, we have refined away much of the nutritional value of our food supply, replacing it with artificial colorings, preservatives, flavorings and conditioners, alcohol and smoking. This poor quality diet, combined with extensive use of antibiotics in medicine and agriculture, may have predisposed many of us to experience a kind of “internal” pollution. Internal pollution occurs when unhealthful bacteria overcome the healthful bacteria in the intestinal tract. These unhealthful bacteria release toxic byproducts into our circulation that can negatively impact many aspects of our overall health.

Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, Inc. Offers Host of Reproductive Health Care Services
Mrs. J came into our center for a routine Pap smear. Married for 20 years and having no history of abnormal Pap tests, she expected to have a normal result. She was shocked to learn that she had an abnormal Pap and a sexually transmitted disease called HPV. Mrs. J didn’t have insurance and was very worried about the cost of the additional tests she needed. Thankfully she qualified for free exams, a Pap test and the colposcopy she needed to evaluate her abnormal Pap.
Weight Loss Can Help
Many of the estimated 70 million obese Americans are trapped in a life-threatening vicious cycle: Obesity aggravates foot problems, like heel pain and flat feet. Sore feet make it hard to exercise and lose weight, and without exercise, obesity worsens and exacerbates progression of diabetes, heart disease and other serious health threats. Today, a Valencia foot and ankle surgeon urged obese adults to seek immediate treatment for chronic, activity-limiting foot and ankle problems to foster compliance with physician-directed exercise programs.
Mindful Meditation for Cancer Patients
Today, a holistic approach to healing includes a thorough awareness of how our minds enhance our recovery process. Mindfulness is a spiritual discipline that calls on the power of your mind to manage physical/emotional pain. For people living with cancer, staying in the present and being mindful about your healing ability is very important. It is easy to overlook the potential to soothe yourself and help with your recovery. Even though you worry, right at that moment, you are safe. Instead of feeling anxious, it is better to focus on what you can do to take care of yourself. Meditation helps you maintain this focus. Cancer patients will realize that there is a deep inner part of your self that keeps you present and valuing right now. Once you experience the calm from Mindful Meditation, you will discover that bad news does not change who you are.
Perimenopause â the Transition to Menopause A Time to Optimize Health
Perimenopause, or transition to menopause, is the stage of a woman’s reproductive life that begins several years before menopause, when the ovaries slowly begin to produce less estrogen and progesterone. It usually starts in a woman’s forties. The average length of perimenopause is four years, but for some women this stage may last only a few months or continue for 10 years. Perimenopause ends the first year after menopause (when a woman has gone 12 months without a period).
Early Detection of Oral Cancer
Every hour of every day in America someone dies of oral cancer. Oral cancer is the sixth most commonly diagnosed form of cancer in the United States. Presently 30,000 patients are diagnosed annually with oral cancer. The five-year survival rate is only 50 percent, accounting for 8,000 deaths each year.
