The Southern California Orthopedic Institute (SCOI) has been an integral part of the Santa Clarita Valley’s health care for the past 20 years.  Opening its first Valencia office in 1989 in a small suite on the Henry Mayo campus, SCOI has grown to become firmly established in the Santa Clarita area.  On March 16th, SCOI moved to its new location in the Bridgeport Center, where it will continue to provide all aspects of quality orthopedic care.  The 22,000 square foot office contains clinical space for SCOI’s orthopedic specialists, an updated and expanded physical therapy and occupational therapy department, digital x-ray, and an MRI.  

Cornea transplantation is the most frequently performed transplant worldwide.  Approximately 40,000 cornea transplants are performed in the United States annually.  The cornea is the front surface of the eye and is responsible for two-thirds of the focusing power of the eye.  It is primarily made of layers of collagen in ordered rows that allow light to pass through.  Injury, infections and disease can cause the cornea to lose its transparency and result in a loss of vision. 

It may surprise you to know that the skin does not actually produce that much more oil in the summertime, although humidity excess perspiration and sunscreen can make you feel a bit slippery.  As a result, many people tend to use stronger cleansers and oil-controlling products to help cut through the greasy feeling.

Obesity is the accumulation of excess body fat that leads to health problems the most serious of which include: Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart Disease, Stroke, Obstructive Sleep Apnea and degenerative joint disease.  Those patients with a Body Mass Index of 35 to 40 with associated health problems qualify for weight loss surgery.  BMI equals weight in pounds/(height in inches) squared multiplied by 703.  The type of weigh loss procedure can have different effects on weight loss and on long term nutritional status.  The most commonly performed procedure is the Gastric Bypass/Laparoscopic Gastric bypass performed in the USA with weight stabilization within the first nine to 12 months with significant weight loss of approximately 60 to 70 percent.
