On the Town

Their weapons: brushes, brooms and rakes; hammers, drills and trash bags. Their missions:  weeding, painting and planting; clearing brush, moving offices and installing cabinets.  They spruced up campsites, organized bookshelves and collected food for the hungry.  They painted playgrounds at elementary schools, fences at an animal sanctuary, and porches at the historic Newhall Ranch House. 

It was a beautiful day for a walk as friends and family gathered on Sunday, October 16 at the Dystance4Dystonia Santa Clarita Valley Walk for a Cure.

Ninety dogs and their human companions came out to Bridgeport Park on Saturday, October 22.  The event took a “Bite” out of cancer raising close to $11,000 in it’s very first year... and really showed the support of our community and our four legged-companions.

It’s always so nice to see our community come together to help others.  In October, students from the Santa Clarita Valley Chinese School came together to write well over 100 get well cards for surgery patients living in an orphanage in Henan, China.

It was a beautiful day in Paradise Cove at Castaic Lake as nearly 4,000 rubber duckies swam to the finish line at the Samuel Dixon Family Health Centers, Inc.’s 9th Annual Rubber Ducky Festival on October 22.

Tom’s Shoes: Style your Soles comes to the Santa Clarita Valley. On Saturday, November 12 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., several local businesses in Santa Clarita came together at Rituals Colour Salon to raise money for the SCV Youth Project, collect food for the local SCV Food Pantry, and kicked off a two month toy drive to benefit the Child and Family Center of SCV.

The sky lit up as 1,500 participants came out to support the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk at Bridgeport Park in Valencia.  Festivities began with live music, a remembrance ceremony honoring loved ones who have passed, and then a walk that began at twilight.

In honor of our veterans, College of the Canyons dedicated a permanent Veterans Garden area at the college’s Canyon Country Campus on Thursday, November 10.  The garden features red, white and blue varietals, and is dedicated to those students who have served our country and are now fulfilling their educational dreams at College of the Canyons.

Fall certainly has been a popular time for artists at B&R Gallery.  On October 22, Robert Copple and Bob Skerskonas visited for their celebration of the arts.  Just a few short weeks later B&R Gallery was proud to hold an artists signing for Judy Larson.

Friends and family gathered at the beautiful Odyssey Restaurant on Friday, November 4 for the Zonta Celebrity Tribute Dinner, honoring James D. Hicken, president and chief executive officer of the Bank of Santa Clarita. 

GameDay Sports Grille & Bar celebrated their grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony with the Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, October 26.  Expect great food and fun for your sports viewing experience!

Hundreds of guests lined Town Center Drive and The Patios at Westfield Valencia Town Center as the Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley hosted their 4th Annual Wine Affair…Sip, Stroll and Savor the Sounds.  

It was an evening of celebration as guests gathered at the 2nd Annual Empowering HeARTS Gala and Art Exhibit on November 19 at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center. Empowering HeARTS, sponsored by Single Mothers Outreach, presented the creative works of local artists who produced unique and inspiring art based on 12 inspiring and empowering women who have changed the lives of those around them and have broken barriers. 

The City of Santa Clarita commemorated the national day of honoring America’s veterans at the Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11.  With this year’s event offering a special moment at 11 a.m., the Veterans Historical Plaza was filled with many residents honoring the day 11/11/11.

Rain didn’t stop participants as they ventured through multiple checkpoints throughout the community for the American Heart Association’s HeartChase event on Sunday, November 20.  Teams competed against one another, gaining points as they uncovered clues, solved puzzles and completed in challenges.

Deck the Halls with boughs of holly and a beautiful array of elaborately decorated holiday trees!  It was an evening of elegance and fun as the Boys & Girls Club of Santa Clarita Valley auctioned off the beautifully decorative trees at The Magic of the Lights Gala on Saturday, November 19.
