With Your Family in Mind
Violent Teens in the Home
As a high-risk teen counselor, I have been running parenting groups for over 25 years. It never ceases to amaze me how many stories I have heard, and will continue to hear about teens who are violent. Teens that don’t get their own way and manipulate mom and dad by punching holes in the walls, throwing things and destroying property. Teens who exert their desire for control in the worst possible ways. Worst yet, we let them.
Exercise at 80 A Little Goes a Long Way Toward Maintaining Independence
A healthy lifestyle that includes exercise and fitness is highly emphasized in today’s society.
The National Institute on Aging released startling statistics after a physical health study performed on elderly aged 75 and older. The study revealed that 40 percent of those studied could not walk two blocks.
Watch What You Say!
I would not put up with anybody talking to me the way I’ve talked to my self. I make a mistake and I berate me. I look in the mirror and I criticize me. I face a challenge and I tell my self, “why I can’t overcome it?” Has your self said anything to you like I have heard my self say to me? “I can’t” or “I’m so stupid” or “I’m so ugly” or “I’m such an idiot.”
Valencia Nissan and Hart District Team Up for Attendance Incentive Program
More than 5,000 excited, screaming spectators are crammed into the home stands at College of the Canyons on a chilly and overcast night. Music is blaring from the PA system and the atmosphere is highly charged in anticipation of the start of the Big Event. Is this the latest round in the historic Hart versus Canyon football rivalry? Or maybe it’s the big boys from COC taking to the field? Not this time.
Toddler Time With Sophia and Edurne Garwick
Well, I must say it has been quite an eventful month. Potty training is at full speed ahead and Sophia is doing great! I can’t even believe my luck. I finally got myself together and actually started working on it and having the patience with Sophia to go on this adventure. I now realize the mistake I had been making. I switched Sophia from diapers to pull-ups months ago but she still saw them as diapers not as underwear.
Keeping Cool during the Summer Months
Keeping the body hydrated is particularly important for the elderly. In addition to proper diet and exercise, hydration plays a very significant role in healthy living for seniors. With the warm weather approaching, the risk for seniors suffering from dehydration increases.
A loss of hydration can impact how seniors look and feel. As our body ages, we experience a decrease in our total body water and our thirst sensation also decreases.
Congratulations Graduating Class
At the Santa Clarita School of Dental Assisting we have enjoyed teaching another assisting class and look forward to celebrating their graduation on June 26, 2010. The hand’s on training they have received prepares them for a career in the dental field with the ability to use their knowledge either in front or back office environment.
Don’t Be Afraid To Bring a Claim When Injured
As many of you know, my main area of practice is Wills and Trusts. However, I also practice personal injury law.
It seems to me that most of my clients are “reluctant” to bring any kind of lawsuit. However, it is natural to sometimes feel that way. An experienced personal injury attorney is not about revenge or “sticking it” to anyone! A good lawyer is honest and works for people to secure what law allows when clients have been injured by someone else’s carelessness. Remember, it is what the law allows! We are working within the system. The system was designed to protect victims. You don’t have to feel “bad” or “awkward” if you’ve been injured and seek compensation.
Senior Citizens and Elder Law Attorneys
In the 2000 census, there were almost 35 million Americans, 65 years of age or older. With the aging of baby-boomers, our 2010 census will undoubtedly reveal a tremendous increase in our senior population. California has the largest number of elderly in the United States, and it has been predicted that this state’s elderly population will increase by almost 80 percent between 2000 and 2025. With the aging of America, we unfortunately see an increase in age-related illness, injuries related to falls, complications of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and need for care both inside and outside of the home.
Revisiting Guardian Nomination with Arrival of Second Child
My second son, Jonah Golshani, was born on August 13, 2009. With his arrival, I recognized the need to re-evaluate the choices I had made for guardians with the arrival of my first son. Some of the thoughts that crossed my mind were: Would my in-laws (that were originally nominated as guardian for my first son) be willing and/or able to care for two children? Were my in-laws too elderly now for such a role? Would any of my other relatives be more suitable for such a role?
What Happens to a Mortgage in Chapter 7 Bankruptcy?
Many individuals or couples that qualify for Chapter 7 bankruptcy wonder what will happen to their mortgage(s), and will they be able to keep their home. The answer depends on the specific situation of that debtor and lender(s).
A Chapter 7 bankruptcy discharges unsecured debt such as credit cards, medical bills, and personal loans. To qualify, a debtor generally has income that is not sufficient to pay back a reasonable portion of the debt within five years.
Inviting Your Spouse to Divorce Mediation

is the beginning of receiving. Make sure you don't go to the ocean with a teaspoon. At least take a bucket so the kids won't laugh at you. – Jim Rohn
May is Foster Parent Appreciation Month!
Foster Parent Month in May provides a wonderful opportunity to honor and recognize the work of people making a difference in the lives of children in foster care. It is also a time to bring awareness to the great need for families to open their homes to these vulnerable children, especially older children and sibling sets of brothers and sisters who wish to remain together, in both foster care and adoption.
“Children’s Bureau greatly appreciates and applauds the foster families in our program.
Addictions and Habits: The Pleasure Principle
Human beings are pleasure principled beings. This means that we are pre-programmed, genetically, philosophically and spiritually, to seek pleasure and avoid pain. This seems elementary, yet it is this pain/pleasure principle that makes kicking a habit or addiction so difficult. I see all walks of life in my office; young teenagers who have difficulty regulating the role that pot should play in their youthful lives, soccer moms who just want to stop recreational, casual drinking, crystal meth users, young adults who just like to “party” and use a little too much coke or booze or ecstasy.
Getting Your Ex to Pay More Support
In these tough financial times, support is becoming even more important. Courts are facing tough challenges with parties losing their jobs. The courts have been giving parents who lose jobs time to find another job. And that only seems fair. The larger problem is where the supporting parent stops working the overtime that you were accustomed to, or even worse, simply works less hours per week. The biggest problem is the perpetually unemployed parent who had no problem supporting the family before the parties separated.
Ask the Voicecat – May 2010
The Magazine of Santa Clarita readers are always sending in great questions about the voiceover business. This month, a voice actor asks about audiobooks.
Q: You have narrated some of my favorite books. I just listened to “Change your Brain, Change your Body.” I love all of Dr. Daniel Amen’s books. I’m curious about how that works. How long does it take to record a whole book like that? What is the pay scale for that kind of work?
How Much Will You Need to Retire?
Where do you want to be during your golden years? Do you want to see the world? Buy that sports car you dreamed of? How about that retirement beach house? To start planning, write down your goals for retirement. Once you have decided, think about what it may take to get there.
Many American workers anticipate an enjoyable retirement after years of the daily grind and commute. Whether it is traveling, golfing, relaxing by the pool... the possibilities seem truly endless. As workers daydream about the world of retirement, few venture to determine how much their retirement lifestyle might cost.
Beware of the Unforgiving Deadlines of Family Court
In every family law case, the list of cast includes a Petitioner and a Respondent. No matter what role you play in your case, the rules by which the family court system conducts their business are applied evenly to all, whether you are represented by an attorney or not. As a result, you must familiarize yourself with the family law rules, the rules of civil procedure, the local rules, as well as the “local rules,” which refer to the rules followed by the particular department to which your case is assigned.
