Venous Insufficiency Incredible Veins
In healthy veins, there is a continuous flow of blood from the limbs back toward the heart, and valves within the veins of the legs help prevent the backflow of blood. But what happens when your vein valves stop working properly?
Venous Insufficiency is a condition where the flow of blood through the veins is inadequate, causing blood to pool in the legs. It can typically be caused by several different vein disorders, but it is most often caused by either blood clots or varicose veins. When forward flow through the veins is obstructed – such as in the case of a blood clot – the blood builds up below the clot, which can lead to venous insufficiency. In varicose veins, the valves are often missing or impaired, and blood leaks back through the damaged valves. In some cases, weakness in the leg muscles, which squeeze blood forward, can also contribute to venous insufficiency.
Other risk factors include: blood clots, varicose veins, obesity, pregnancy, smoking, cancer, muscle weakness, leg injury or trauma, swelling of a superficial vein (phlebitis), family history of venous insufficiency and inactivity (sitting or standing for long periods of time without moving can cause high blood pressure in the leg veins and increase your risk).
One option for treatment is Sclerotherapy, a technique used to get rid of spider veins and smaller varicose veins close to the surface of the leg. The procedure involves injecting a solution directly into the vein, causing the walls of the vein to seal shut so it eventually disappears from view. This procedure is considered non-invasive, and most patients are back to their normal activities right after treatment.
For veins that are too large to treat with Sclerotherapy, but too small to safely use laser or RF treatments, Ambulatory Microphlebectomy may be an option. The procedure begins with a tiny incision in the skin right above the vein. A small hook-like tool is inserted into the incision, gripping the vein and gently removing it from the leg. The incisions are so small there is no need for stitches during the procedure, and patients experience very little scarring afterward. The entire procedure can be done at the Incredible Veins Center, and most patients are back to normal activities the next day.
