Confidence like Babe Ruth Doesn’t Make Sense But, It Works

by | Sep 25, 2018 | Health & Fitness

What is confidence, and should we want more or less of it?  The answer lies at the end of another question; Would you prefer your surgeon or pilot to have or lack confidence?  Confidence has a direct relation to performance. Mickey Mantle is regarded a home run hitting legend of baseball 60 years after he stopped playing.  Even though he was the first player in history to hit it 54 home runs in a season, the truth is that he had far more strikeouts than home runs. That same year he had 112 strikeouts!  How does a player step up to the plate and expect success when the fail so often? Many of us have picked up an instrument or tried a sport, just to give it up frustrated with time, effort and mental energy wasted.  I’ve been a coach for 23 years and athlete my entire life. I have seen the look of defeat on the faces of my opponents, sometimes my players, clients and sometimes the in the mirror. How do people like Mickey Mantle and Babe Ruth step up to the plate pointing their bat promising a home run? Confidence—After all, they are professional athletes.
The answer lies in what they’ve learned to get to the “Big Leagues”:
1. Have a short memory about “feeling mistakes” and a long memory for the lesson of the mistake.
2. The Law of Rejecting Rejection is an equation.  If you determine you will have to take five swings (or sales calls or interviews) to get the home run (or new client or new job) then with each rejection, you actually get closer to the “yes”. You reject the rejection with enthusiastic anticipation of the home run!
3. Believe you are already the athlete (salesman, manager, spouse or parent) you want to be and act accordingly.
