Stone Soup
Stone Soup is an old folk tale in which hungry travelers come to a village carrying nothing with them but a large pot. The villagers are unwilling to share any of their food. So, the travelers take the pot to the nearby stream, fill it with water, drop a big stone in and then place the pot over a fire. The villagers become curious and start to ask what the strangers are doing.
Nurturing and Encouraging our Future Town & Country Farm School Celebrates 39 Years in the SCV
Town & Country Farm School is a staple of the community in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Tucked away in the beautiful and picturesque Placerita Canyon, Town & Country Farm School has created an environment where children have come to grow, learn and explore the world around them.
Civic Learning and the November 4th Elections
In this year’s primary elections, we had the lowest voter turnout in the state’s history. About 18 percent of all eligible voters cast a ballot. Only 25 percent of all registered voters voted. Our own local elections turn out between 11 to 15 percent of registered voters.
One legislator recently recommended that we pay citizens to vote. In Australia, citizens face fines if they don’t vote.

How is the New School Year Going So Far? Warning Signs of Student Academic and Social Challenges.
School’s back in session. Your child has completed the first quarter or first few months of the new school year. How is it going? Some children/adolescents are forthcoming about their feelings and emotions. Others are more closed off. So, if our kids don’t tell us what’s going on, how can we know? One simple phrase: All behavior is communication. When a student is having trouble in school, it usually shows in their behavior.
Art – A Beautiful Life Enrichment
Robert Henri (1865 –1929) was an American painter and teacher. He visited Spain six times in his adult life to teach his students there, as well as to paint for himself. The San Diego Fine Art Museum just had a show of his work from Spain, and it was inspiring.
Which Musical Instrument Should You Play?
There are hundreds of different musical instruments, so how do you choose which one to play? Consider the age, size, and experience of the student learning. This will help you to choose an instrument appropriate for their physical abilities and attention span. Also think about what styles of music you like, how much practice time you will have, and how you would like to learn to play the instrument. There are many different teaching styles, approaches, and methods. How much money do you want to spend on the instrument and lessons?
What Thanksgiving Means to CBS Preschool
For most of us, Thanksgiving is a time for pause, a time to take a break from the hectic pace of life and be grateful for the blessings we’ve been given. It’s a time for family and togetherness. Beth Shalom Preschool is thankful for many things.
We are thankful for the parents that trust us with their precious children.
Eleven Steps for Better Grades
Fall is here and summer has faded away, and now grades are posted. One of the most common questions I’m asked by parents is how to respond to bad grades.
The first thing to remember is that the child’s report card is the child’s.
Classical Education –Teaching Students How to Think
Dr. Stanley Fish is one of America’s great educators and thinkers. Professor of humanities and law at Florida International University, in Miami, and dean emeritus of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Dr. Fish points to his high school education as having the greatest influence on his education.
Is Your Child College Bound?
High school is often thought of as the best time for students to prepare in their educational journey towards college. However, it may be more appropriate to identify high school as a time to continue preparing for college. As professional athletes can attest, you get to the top by starting with the basics.
Since all steps in the learning process are affected by the ones before them, the sooner students begin preparing for college, the better.
Finally…Math Makes Sense!
For junior high and high school students with developmental and learning disabilities, math class can present a significant challenge. Grade level math may be out of reach, and even if the student is prepared for grade level instruction, the pacing and delivery in a regular education classroom may prevent strong learning. The Imago Dei School at Trinity Classical Academy presents an innovative, engaging, and personalized learning opportunity to help bridge the achievement gap that distances students with special needs from their regular education classmates.
Coding and STEAM in the Sulphur Springs School District
As Steve Jobs once said, “Everybody in this country should learn how to program a computer...because it teaches you how to think.” Thanks to the new SSSD Coding Club, 5th grade students in the Sulphur Springs School District are getting the opportunity to learn computer programming through the creation of a video game or digital animation.
In-depth Learning through Technology Integration
Canyon Springs Community School classrooms are technology rich learning environments allowing us to best prepare our students for the demands of college, workforce training, and life in a technological global society. Technology integration gives our teachers the opportunity to teach with relevance, capture student attention, maintain student motivation, but most importantly our students are able to deepen their understanding of grade level Common Core State Standards (CCSS) through the exploration of higher order thinking skills and creativity.
Pilot Program May Add New Bachelor’s Degree Option at College of the Canyons
University Center already offers 40 different bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees. Historic legislation signed Monday by Governor Jerry Brown could provide local residents with another option to earn a bachelor’s degree in the Santa Clarita Valley.
Brown signed Senate Bill 850 authored by Sen. Marty Block (D-San Diego), which authorizes the California Community Colleges to launch a pilot program for 15 college districts to offer bachelor’s degree programs.
Being Thankful
This is the time of year that we stop and reflect on the many things for which we are thankful. Words like “thanks” and “thankful” may get lost in our busy, and at times distracting nature of our daily lives.
Capture your Child’s Attention to Promote Learning
In order for learning to take place, a child must first be able to attend to the environment and to people. Most of a child’s early learning takes place through, watching, and listening. Children with autism do not demonstrate an adequate level of attention to people, as this does not appear to be inherently motivating for them.
