I am no expert in the field of gender analysis, however being a male, and the husband of a colon hydrotherapist at Optimal Health in Santa Clarita, I have observed several differences over the years and often wondered, why?

In a poll recently conducted in our Santa Clarita Valley, Comfort Keepers In-Home Care was voted number one in Senior Care.  I would like to thank everyone who voted for us.  Our goal is to maintain the dignity for those who came before us and molded our great country, and give seniors and other adults the ability to remain comfortably and safely in their own homes. 

The Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center’s Saturday morning T’ai Chi Ch’uan class is accepting new students, starting on October 3, 2009.  Instructor Sharon Chang will welcome new students of all ages into the on-going 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. class at the SCV Senior Center, 22900 Market Street.  The cost is $30 per month per person.  Those interested are welcome to come by the class before October 3 to observe, but pre-registration is not necessary.  Loose clothing and flat shoes are recommended.

Depressive disorder is manifested by mental dejection, reticence or incoherent speech, while manic disorder is characterized by shouting, restlessness and violent behaviors. As described in Classic Medical Problems, depressive disorder is caused by excessive yin, while manic disorder by abundant yang. The most important etiological factor of manic-depressive disorder is emotional injury.

We are very pleased to announce that Dr. Brian R. Gross will be joining our practice.  Dr. Gross is familiar to the residents of Santa Clarita, having practiced here for 25 years.  Dr. Gross is a native of Los Angeles, graduated from UCLA, and received his medical degree from UC Davis.  After completing a residency in Ophthalmology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan, he returned to Southern California and opened his practice in Valencia in 1984.

If you have been following my monthly editorials, by now you know that weSPARK is a nonprofit cancer support center whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for cancer patients and their families and friends.  In addition to our support groups, we have many complementary and healing classes that are helpful with decreasing anxiety and depression and improving the immune system.  One of the classes we offer on a monthly basis is jewelry making.

A middle-aged man who takes care of horses was in his barn on a hot Southern California August day.  While working, he reached back for an eight-ounce water bottle, and chugged it down.  Feeling the heat beat on him like a cruel hammer, he was forced to sit down.  He felt ill, had blurry vision, was unable to move his legs and passed out at high noon.

Quite often we find ourselves feeling the need to do a fast, a internal cleanse or any type of detox.  These are all great ideas and I recommend everyone try it at least once to not only clean the body, but also clear the mind and soul.  When we do these cleanses, we often believe that just making the effort to take the capsules or juice the veggies is all we need to do. 

I had a call today from the granddaughter of a 90-year-old woman who didn’t understand why grandma couldn’t find a caregiver who would cook a simple, soft food diet that could allow her to enjoy home-cooked meals again.  The granddaughter said she used to do the cooking, but she just didn’t have the time anymore.  And her grandmother was becoming less and less motivated to eat. 

When I was 18 months old, I was diagnosed with a moderate to severe hearing loss in both ears.  I am 26 years old now.  To me, hearing aids are second nature, and a large part of why I was able to attend mainstream schools and become gainfully employed without any other accommodations.

We all want mens sana en corpore sano, a “sound mind in a sound body.”  Maybe the Romans had it backward.  Maybe it should read, “sound body in a sound mind.”  Before you start promising to eat better and exercise more, you’d better first put your mind to improving what may be the most critical foundation of a healthier life—your own mental attitude.

During the summer and fall many people go to woodland parks and wilderness areas for recreation and to exercise.  You must take care in these areas not to be exposed to poison ivy plants.  The most common poisonous plants are from the “toxicodendron” family and the most commonly known of these is poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac.

R&R — removal and replacement — of breast implants is one of the most common outpatient procedures I perform in my office operating suite.  Breast implants may need to be replaced for a variety of reasons, including capsular contracture, a broken implant, or the desire for a size change.

Dental veneers can be used to cosmetically enhance your smile.  Veneers can be used to whiten your teeth, repair chips, cracks, or worn areas of teeth, close gaps between teeth, and in some cases, correct misaligned teeth. 

Even though there is no specific age to start treatment, it is recommended that a child see an orthodontist as early as seven years of age.  There are no strict guidelines on what can be corrected at that age but typically problems such as cross-bites (or narrow jaws), under-bites (lower jaw being ahead of upper jaw), flared upper front teeth (that are at great risk for trauma), severe crowding, harmful habits (such as thumb or finger sucking), open bites (front teeth not coming together), missing teeth, impacted teeth may need to be treated at an early age.
