Many Southern California residents take day-trips and are now seeking ways to contain it to one tank of gas.  Rick Romero, popular newscaster with Los Angeles ABC Channel 7 featured Fillmore and Santa Paula recently in his One-Tank Getaways. 

Now that the kiddies are back in school, it’s time to relax with a few laughs at J.R.’s Comedy Club.  We have an exceptional lineup of talented comedians guaranteed to make you laugh out loud.
We start on September 2 and 3 with Rob Little, whose raw enthusiasm is infectious the minute he walks on stage.  He has appeared on The Best Damn Sports Show on Fox and was the winner of the Sierra Mist Comedy Competition.

My hometown, Seattle, is a green haven where Seasonal Affective Disorder is a formidable plague and plaid flannel is layered under Northface fleece as a necessary precaution against frigid rain.  It’s generally regarded as a pale caffeine addict’s paradise. There are no gang-dominated neighborhoods, but we do have Microsoft Country, which is equally dangerous because of the large concentration of overworked and slightly depressed software geniuses lurking about.
Unsurprisingly, my family’s impending move to Southern California aroused an inkling of trepidation. 

Hello Comedy Fans!  We have another terrific month of comedy in August; highlighted by Dave Coulier, who starred as “Uncle Joey,” on the hit show Full House.  Some people may not know this, but Dave Coulier was one of the top comedians in the country when he was cast on this very popular show and became a household friend. 

Croeso Again (That’s “Welcome” in Welsh).  For those of you just tuning in, my name is Denise Carbone (formerly Denise McCarthy) and my husband Joe and I run The Welsh Baker.  We are America’s premiere purveyors of Welsh Cakes west of the Mississippi.  We make our cakes right here in Santa Clarita and we sell them by the thousands at fairs, festivals and events throughout the Western States.  We also sell our cakes locally thru the Coffee Kiosk chain of drive thru coffee stores.
What is a Welsh Cake?  I’ve heard that question at least a thousand times!  Welsh Cakes are a unique Celtic treat from Wales, a tradition passed down thru the generations in Welsh families.  They are a griddled cake, not baked, which is the key to their unique taste and texture.  I’ve been griddling cakes using making my family recipe since I was a little girl growing up in Wales.

The majority of Santa Clarita’s population is made up of couples, and most with a child or three.  This poses a bit of a problem when it comes to the intricacies of going out for the night.  Yet still a very important part of mommy and daddy’s sanity.  After all, that was a big part of getting most couples from “me” to “we”!  And now that the dating is done, you take out all the pointless games; we simply call it “Date Night”!  So when the stars are aligned, you’ve cleared your calendars and found someone you somewhat trust to watch the kids, but are not looking to stray so far from home… what to do in the SCV?

Why not have a fajita burrito?  A burrito is one of the more popular Mexican dishes composed of a variety of meat selections.  Most people enjoy them with fillings such as lime, onion, cheese, cilantro, lettuce, sour cream, salsa, guacamole, etc.  Most families enjoy burritos because they are a quick and easy meal all rolled into one tortilla.  They are also very easy to eat when you are on the go.  To add variety to your burritos try it “fajita” style.
There is a long history for this hand-held take out food.  Indigenous people have been recorded eating hand held snacks for a long time.

Join Pine Mountain Club on August 19 through 21, as a multifaceted festival takes place at the base of Mt. Pinos in the Los Padres National Forest.  This third annual cultural celebration, inspired by Chumash legends, to whom Mt. Pinos was Liyikshup, or “Center of the World,” features Native American storytelling, storytelling videos, songwriting competition, and an amateur playwright competition, with plays about humankind’s relationship with nature and ecological challenges.
The eco-drama theme is based upon the Chumash concept of keeping balance with the universe and humankind.  Ten short plays, chosen from selections received from around the U.S., will be performed in a reader’s theater style.  The audience votes for grand prize festival winner.

Running a small business (the mom and pops of our community) in a world of large chain stores is a tough endeavor.  Most importantly, it requires commitment... a huge commitment.  It requires long, hard hours.  So you have to believe in it more than anyone else.  You have to be truly passionate about what you do.  Passion is not something that can be taught, but it’s something you definitely need.  If you love what you do, that love will be seen in your product.  And sooner rather than later everyone will be catching onto that passion.
