With Your Family in Mind

Too often we receive calls from clients who have just been in a car accident. This is very upsetting to us. Thus, we want to do whatever we can to help reduce accidents for our clients and for everyone who reads this magazine. Here are a few tips and reminders that can prevent an accident from happening.
Welcome to the Family of Children’s Bureau
In July our focus is on how to adopt a child. Our adoptive parents provide permanent homes for children who can no longer live with their birth families. For many children, adoption can be their only chance of experiencing a loving, caring family life. Often foster parents choose to adopt their foster child when it is not possible for the child to return home safely.
Hot Weather Help for Older Adults
When the heat is on it’s time for everyone to take extra precautions to avoid heat related illnesses and even death. Each year approximately 200 die of heat related issues. Now is a critical time for preventing heat related health issues in older adults. As we age, physical changes take place and older adults lose the ability to cool down whereas younger ones have the ability to cool themselves faster.
State Bar of California Updates Major Public Education
The California State Bar has updated its guide for consumers, “Seniors & the Law: A Guide for Maturing Californians.” More than four million California residents are age 65 or older, making California the most senior-populated state in the nation.
A special section is devoted to Senior Housing Options answering questions regarding whether a landlord can evict a senior for any reason at all, if an eviction can be stopped if it leaves a senior homeless, what happens to a senior if the landlord loses the home in a foreclosure and whether a mobile home can be rented if a senior is hospitalized for an extended period of time.
Estate Planning: What Happens to My Business If I Die?
A friend, whom we’ll call Charlie, has assets in excess of $100,000, including his own business, a sole proprietorship. He asks, “If I die, what will happen to my business?”
If his estate is subject to probate, everything will be tied up for eight months to a year. His personal representative won’t even be officially appointed for at least four weeks after filing a Petition for Probate. Meanwhile, the business decisions anyone makes will be without legal authority. No one may be able to sign contracts. Unless someone has some of Charlie’s money put aside, his bills may not get paid. There goes one business down the drain!
Postural Changes in Pregnancy
During the course of pregnancy, a woman’s body undergoes innumerable changes biochemically and structurally which can create postural strain, neck and back pain. A brief look at the anatomy of the spine provides insight as to why chiropractic adjustments can facilitate a healthier, more comfortable pregnancy.
Ask the Voicecat – July 2009
Here’s an interesting voiceover question from a Magazine of Santa Clarita reader about voice quality:
Q: I’ve been recording voiceovers for about five years, but I wonder about my voice quality. The question I keep asking myself is, “Do listeners enjoy listening to my voice?” My voice is okay, but not as pure and clear and beautiful as I want. How can I improve my voice tone quality so that people love to hear my voice? Can I ever have a “beautiful” voice? Would it make sense to find a singing coach? What makes my voice less than beautiful? —Mike B., Los Angeles, CA

I Used to Work for the Insurance Companies â Now I Work for You
I recently read a great book on marketing that said, “Don’t assume your clients know what you do. You must tell them!” I took that advice to heart. Most people know that I handle estate planning, probate, and trusts. However, most people do not know that I also practice Personal Injury Law.
The Benefits of Group Psychotherapy
Group Psychotherapy consists of meeting with an experienced mental health professional in a group of no more than 12 other individuals. Usually the meetings are once a week for either an agreed upon number of weeks or they can be continuous. There are various types of groups.
Shopping for Healthcare
During these inflationary times, everyone is looking for a bargain, a sale, a percent off sign. But is there such a thing when it comes to healthcare?
Absolutely! Now you don’t want to set your sites on a bargain basement surgeon or unorthodox medical treatments. But there remains a lot less drastic opportunities to save and still receive topnotch care and products.
Is this a Final Child Custody Order?
Clients often ask if their child custody order is the “final” order. The answer to that question can be yes and no. While the Court may refer to custody orders made after the Judgment for Dissolution is entered as “final” or “permanent” it is important for parents to understand that no order is “final” in that it can never be changed. Child custody orders may always be modified if certain criteria are met.
Independence? Or Just a Bunch of Firecrackers?
“None of us is as smart as all of us.” - Ken Blanchard
We’ve often heard, “If getting married was as complicated as getting divorced, there would be fewer marriages — and fewer divorces.” Divorce requires decisions about finances, taxes, real estate transactions, child development, and many other areas of need.
Fast Track Paramedic to RN Program Introduced at College of the Canyons
Paramedics looking to jump into the high demand field of nursing will be able to quickly make that transition through College of the Canyons’ new “paramedic to RN” program.
Providing yet another potential solution to California’s statewide nursing shortage, the recently introduced “paramedic to RN” program will fast track qualified students through the process needed to obtain licensing as a registered nurse — in as little as 15 months.
Let’s Celebrate Inter-Dependence Day Instead
In the United States, the Fourth of July is set aside to celebrate our independence. Many of us will mark the day by attending firework displays, enjoying barbecues, watching parades, waiving American flags, going to baseball games, eating apple pie, and listening to theatrical recitations of the Declaration of Independence. Our country will be decorated in red, white, and blue. We’ll sing patriotic songs.

Is It Time for a Change?
Making the decision to move our parent or loved one into an assisted living community doesn’t need to be difficult if we approach the challenge in a positive way.
For our parents, they are accustomed to being independent and maintaining their own homes. The thought of leaving a beloved home that holds many years of memories can bring sadness and grief.
