On the Town

The one thing all of the walkers in this years Relay For Life event had in common was the reason they were participating in the America Cancer Society event that raised nearly $500,000 this year alone. 

Wine and music lovers came out in droves this year at the Wine Classic to benefit the Santa Clarita Valley Youth Orchestra.  There were double the number of attendees at the event held at the California School for the Arts, compared with last years turn-out.  

Golf players, sponsors and volunteers deserve kudos for their part in making the 34th Annual Frontier Toyota/Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital “Drive Safe” Golf Classic tournament, awards dinner and auction a huge success. The event raised about $280,000 to benefit the hospital’s Emergency and Trauma Services. 

Sandy’s, Danny’s and lots of Pink Ladies attended the 36th Annual Boys & Girls Club of the Santa Clarita Valley Benefit Auction. “Grease is the Word” was held at the Mann Biomedical Center on June 9.

In honor of her many years of dedicated service in making College of the Canyons’ University Center a reality, Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook, Superintendent/President of the Santa Clarita Community College District and College of the Canyons, was extolled as a living legacy to the continued progress of the ever-expanding campus.

It was a rip-roarin’ night to remember as gorgeous fashions, exquisite laces, sleek leathers, stunning dresses, stylish jeans and one-of-a-kind blouses and skirts were modeled during the Cowboy Couture Fashion Show recently held at the Canyon Theatre Guild in conjunction with the 14th Annual Cowboy Festival.   The Canyon Theatre Guild and the City of Santa Clarita sponsored the event.

The city of Santa Clarita recently honored Harry Dean Stanton, co-star of HBO’s hit television series Big Love, along with stuntman/actor Phil Rawlins, during the 2007 Walk of Western Stars unveiling ceremonies recently held in conjunction with the city of Santa Clarita’s 14th annual Cowboy Festival.

Local residents, Chris and Amy Boswell, have opened up their new Oasis Garden & Patio in Santa Clarita.  After having a successful Oasis Garden & Patio store in Ventura for eight years, they decided the time is right to have one in their hometown as well. 

Amid fanfare and ribbon cutting ceremonies, city and state dignitaries made official the opening of the 1.6-mile portion of the $245 million, eight and a-half-mile Cross Valley Connector highway that will eventually link Interstate 5 and Highway 126 on the west to Highway 14 (the Antelope Valley Freeway) on the east.

With the best two-day in a row score of his life, West Ranch High School sophomore, Colin Wheeler was the winner of the 2-day Newhall Land Cup Golf boys event recently played at the Tournament Players Club.
“It was a lot of fun, but, I never thought I’d win,” said Wheeler before picking up the trophy for his winning score of 142, 71 on each of the days.

Food, music and shopping were in order as 42,000 area festival-lovers came out on a windy week-end to indulge in all the Poppy Festival had to offer this year.

Transportation, water, education and healthcare were but a few of the topics on the minds of Santa Clarita Valley Chamber CEO, Larry Mankin and a group of high-profile citizens from the Valley who recently traveled to Washington D.C. on an annual trip.

With the proceeds from Spring Fling, a fabulous week-end of events at Alcove Equestrian center in Sand Canyon, families with special needs will be offered invaluable and life-changing therapy on horseback at the Heads up therapy ranch.  $14,000 was raised at the Friday evening sold-out dinner, auction and world-class horse exhibition. 

Rita Garasi — a long-time community volunteer — was honored by College of the Canyons as the recipient of the coveted Silver Spur Community Service Award for 2007 during recent ceremonies held at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City.

The Child and Family Center in Santa Clarita will be the recipient of $200,000 raised at the Taste of the Town auction and party following a grand turnout for the popular May event. 

Actor Jon Cryer from the TV show Two and a Half Men was the special guest star of the recent Heart to Hart show choir fundraiser.  He is the uncle of one of the Hart High School show choir performers, but, the real stars at the event were the students who showed off their skills at dancing, singing and perfectly choreographed entertainment.  

More than 500 people came out to support the Santa Clarita Arthritis Walk this year raising nearly $95,000.  

With an eye on not only having fun, but also on raising money to keep Santa Clarita Chamber of Commerce membership costs down and providing low-cost training programs, golfers took to the greens in the Oak Tree Golf Classic held recently at the Tournament Players Club in Valencia.
